How the medborgarskapsprov works: format, dates, and cost

A plain-English guide to Sweden's new citizenship test. What it covers, how the first sitting in August 2026 works, and how to prepare.

Sweden is introducing a citizenship test, the medborgarskapsprov. The first test takes place in August 2026. This guide explains, in plain English, what the test is, what it looks like, and how to prepare. Updated in July 2026.

What the test is

From June 6, 2026, most people between 16 and 66 who apply for Swedish citizenship need to show knowledge of the Swedish language and of Swedish society. One way to show society knowledge is to pass the medborgarskapsprov, a knowledge test run by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR).

The test is based on one official study booklet: Sverige i fokus, published by UHR together with Skolverket on assignment from the government. UHR states that the test is based on this material, so everything you can be asked comes from those pages. The booklet covers geography, democracy, how Sweden is governed, elections, law, media, human rights, work and money, welfare, modern history, Sweden and the world, religion, and traditions.

The format

According to UHR, the first test works like this:

  • The test is on paper and entirely in Swedish.
  • It has about 60 questions.
  • The questions are multiple choice with four options, and exactly one answer is correct.
  • The test time is 90 minutes.

One honest note: UHR has not published a pass mark. Anyone who claims to know how many correct answers you need is guessing. Prepare to know the material, not to clear a specific bar.

Dates, place, and cost

The first sitting takes place on the morning of August 15, 2026, at Stockholmsmässan in Stockholm. The August 2026 test is free of charge.

Registration for the first sitting is closed because the test is full. Information about future sittings, registration, and any fees is published by UHR, so check uhr.se for the current schedule.

A separate test in the Swedish language is planned for later. Migrationsverket's information mentions the society test starting in August 2026, with the language test to follow.

How to prepare

Because the exam is based on a single known booklet, preparation is unusually concrete:

  1. Study the material. Our study path turns each chapter of Sverige i fokus into a readable module in simple Swedish, with every word tappable for a translation, key vocabulary, and practice questions cited to the exact pages.
  2. Practice in the real format. The real test is multiple choice in Swedish, so practice the same way.
  3. Check yourself under time. Try our free mini mock, no account needed, to see where you stand.
