Swedish particle verbs: tycka om, känna igen, komma ihåg

The two-word verbs of Swedish, why the stress lands on the particle, and how hälsa på can mean greet or visit depending on where you put the emphasis.

You've been using one since the beginning: tycka om, to like, is two words working as one verb. Swedish is full of these verb-plus-particle teams, where a small word like upp, om or igen glues onto a verb and produces a meaning you often couldn't guess from the parts. English does exactly this (give up, look after, run into), so the concept is free; what's new in Swedish is a stress rule with real consequences.

The stress lives on the particle

In a particle verb, the particle is stressed. Tycker OM, äter UPP, känner IGEN. This isn't decoration; sometimes it's the only thing separating two meanings:

  • hälsa på with the stress on på: to visit someone.
  • hälsa på with the stress on hälsa: to greet someone.

Vi hälsar på mormor is either a Sunday visit or a wave across the street, and only your emphasis tells them apart. Tap the examples at the end of this article and listen for where the weight falls.

The starter set

äta uppto eat up, finisheat up
känna igento recogniseknow again
komma ihågto remembercome to mind
hälsa påto visitgreet upon

That last one is a gift: same verb, same particle, same meaning as English.

Where everything goes

The particle sits tight against its verb, before any object:

  • Hon äter upp maten. She finishes the food. (Not "äter maten upp".)
  • Jag känner igen honom. I recognise him.

Inte squeezes in between the verb and the particle:

  • Jag tycker inte om fisk. I don't like fish.

And through the tenses, the particle just tags along: tyckte om, har tyckt om; åt upp, har ätit upp.

How to learn them

Like en/ett and like plural forms: as whole words. When you meet a new verb, notice whether a particle belongs to it, and save the pair together. The platform's flashcards treat tycka om as one item for exactly this reason.
