En or ett? Swedish noun gender explained

Why every Swedish noun is either an en word or an ett word, the few rules of thumb that actually help, and the smart way to memorise new nouns.

Every Swedish noun belongs to one of two genders. A car is en bil, a house is ett hus, and which little word a noun takes (en or ett) is something Swedes know by feel and learners have to learn. This article gives you the honest picture: what the two genders affect, the handful of patterns that genuinely help, and the habit that makes the whole problem manageable.

The two genders

Swedish grammar calls them common gender (en words, also called n-words or utrum) and neuter (ett words). The names don't matter much. What matters:

articleexamples
en wordsenen bil (a car), en katt (a cat), en stol (a chair), en fråga (a question)
ett wordsettett hus (a house), ett bord (a table), ett barn (a child), ett äpple (an apple)

There is no connection to natural gender. A woman is en kvinna and a man is en man, both common gender, while a child is ett barn, neuter. The gender is a property of the word, not of the thing.

Why it matters more than it looks

En or ett is not just about the word for "a". The gender of a noun decides:

  • its definite form: bilen (the car) but huset (the house), covered in the next article
  • which "it" pronoun refers to it: den for en words, det for ett words
  • the endings of adjectives that describe it: en stor bil but ett stort hus (an A2 topic)

Get the gender wrong and every one of those follows along wrong. That's why it pays to learn it from the start.

The rules of thumb that actually exist

Swedish textbooks are honest about this: there is no complete rule. About three out of four nouns are en words, and beyond that you have patterns, not laws.

  • People and animals are almost always en words. En kvinna, en man, en lärare (a teacher), en hund (a dog), en katt. The famous exception: ett barn (a child).
  • Nouns ending in -a are almost always en words. En flicka (a girl), en lampa (a lamp), en soffa (a sofa).
  • Nouns ending in -um are ett words. Ett museum, ett centrum, ett datum (a date).
  • When you have to guess, guess en. Three to one odds.

Everything else is memory. Which brings us to the habit.

Learn the article as part of the word

Never memorise "hus = house". Memorise ett hus, as if the ett were the first syllable of the word. Say it aloud that way, write it down that way, save the flashcard that way. Learners who bolt the gender on later fight it for years; learners who treat it as part of the word never think about it again.

Swedish dictionaries help: look up any noun and the entry tells you its gender, usually by showing the definite ending. On this platform, tapping a noun shows it with its article.
