Easy Swedish reader: småprat, or why the bus is so quiet

An A1 Swedish text about small talk in Sweden. When Swedes chat with strangers, when they don't, and the one topic that always works. With audio.

New arrivals always notice the same thing: the bus is silent. This short text explains, in easy Swedish, when Swedes make small talk (småprat), when they don't, and why the silence is not what it seems. It also revisits du-reformen, which you met in the pronouns article.

Swedish

Svenskar talar inte så mycket med främlingar. På bussen är det tyst. Ingen pratar.

English

Swedes don't talk much with strangers. On the bus it's quiet. Nobody chats. Everyone looks at their phone.

But Swedes are not unfriendly. They don't want to disturb. It's a form of respect.

Sometimes Swedes are happy to talk with strangers. The weather is always a good topic. "What lovely weather!" people say in the summer. "What terrible weather!" people say in the autumn. And do you have a dog? Then everyone talks to you.

In Sweden you say du to everyone: to your boss, to your doctor and to old people. It's called the du reform, and it dates from the 1960s.

What about you? Do you talk to strangers on the bus?
