Who is exempt from the medborgarskapsprov?
Not everyone needs to take Sweden's citizenship test. Age limits, existing qualifications, and exemptions, explained in plain English.
Sweden's knowledge requirement for citizenship does not mean that everyone sits the medborgarskapsprov. This article explains, based on Migrationsverket's published information, who does not need the test at all. It is an orientation, not legal advice: whether an exemption applies to you is always Migrationsverket's decision in your individual case. Updated in July 2026.
Outside the age range
The knowledge requirement applies to applicants between 16 and 66 years old. If you are under 16 or 67 and older when the requirement is assessed, it does not apply to you.
You can already prove your knowledge
The test exists for people who cannot document their knowledge another way. Migrationsverket accepts several existing forms of proof, for example:
- an approved grade in Swedish from Swedish school, year 9 or higher
- studies at Komvux or a folk high school
- an approved grade in Swedish for Immigrants, SFI course D
- certain other qualifications, such as the Tisus test
If you already hold accepted proof, you do not need the medborgarskapsprov. The complete and current list of accepted proof is on Migrationsverket's website.
Exemptions for health and similar reasons
Migrationsverket's information mentions exemptions from the knowledge requirement for people with functional disabilities or other legitimate reasons. Expect to need documentation, for example medical certificates. How this is assessed in practice is up to Migrationsverket.
Related but separate: the income requirement
The self-sufficiency requirement is a different requirement with its own exceptions, for example for people receiving pension, people who cannot work because of permanent disability, and full-time students with approved results. Being exempt from one requirement does not automatically exempt you from another.
Nordic citizens
Citizens of Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway have their own simpler procedure with a 2-year residence requirement. If that is you, read Migrationsverket's pages for Nordic citizens rather than the general rules.
If the test does apply to you
Then the good news is that the test is based on one public booklet, Sverige i fokus, and preparation is very concrete. Our study path covers every chapter, and the free mini mock shows you where you stand in a few minutes.
