What happens after you pass the medborgarskapsprov?

Passing Sweden's citizenship test is one step, not the finish line. What the result counts for, what remains in the application, and what citizenship brings.

Passing the medborgarskapsprov is a real milestone, but it is one requirement among several on the way to Swedish citizenship. Here is what the result means and what usually remains, based on UHR's and Migrationsverket's published information. It is an orientation, not legal advice. Updated in July 2026.

What the result counts for

A passed society test is proof of the society part of the knowledge requirement in your citizenship application. Keep whatever confirmation you receive. Practical details about results, certificates and future sittings are published by UHR, so follow their pages rather than rumors.

Note that the knowledge requirement has two parts: knowledge of Swedish society and knowledge of the Swedish language. If you cannot document your Swedish another way, a separate language test is planned, according to Migrationsverket in autumn 2027. Many people already meet the language part through school grades, SFI course D, or similar proof.

What usually remains in the application

The rest of the citizenship requirements are unaffected by your test result. As a main rule that means:

  • the residence-time requirement, 8 years as a main rule with shorter times for some groups
  • the self-sufficiency requirement, with its exceptions
  • the honest-living requirement
  • proving your identity, including the personal identity check at Migrationsverket
  • the application itself and its fee, 2,900 kronor for an adult

The details and your individual assessment belong to Migrationsverket.

When citizenship is granted

Some things that come with Swedish citizenship, drawn from the official study material itself:

  • You can vote in riksdagsval. Voting in parliamentary elections is reserved for Swedish citizens, as Sverige i fokus explains on page 14.
  • You can get a Swedish passport and national ID card, which the police issue to Swedish citizens (Sverige i fokus, p. 18).
  • You may be welcomed at a ceremony. Many municipalities hold ceremonies for new citizens on Sweden's national day, June 6 (Sverige i fokus, p. 46).
  • You become an EU citizen, with the freedom to work and study across the EU (Sverige i fokus, p. 39).

If you have not taken the test yet

The test is based on one public booklet, and studying it properly is the whole game. Work through the study path, then test yourself with the free mini mock.
