Sweden and the world on the citizenship test: EU, UN and Nato

Nordic cooperation, EU membership since 1995, the UN, the long peace and Nato membership 2024. The international chapter of the medborgarskapsprov.

Chapter 11 of Sverige i fokus, pages 39 to 41, covers Sweden's place in the world, from Nordic councils to Nato membership. It contains some of the most current facts in the whole material, which makes it a likely source of questions on the medborgarskapsprov.

What the test can ask

  • Nordic cooperation through the Nordic Council and the Nordic Council of Ministers.
  • The EU: a political and economic cooperation created after the Second World War for peace and stability, with Sweden a member since 1995, and the four freedoms letting people study, move, work and sell goods across borders.
  • The Council of Europe, founded 1949, with the European Court of Human Rights.
  • The UN and its purposes: peace and security, resolving conflicts, equal worth and self-determination of peoples, human rights. Sida is Sweden's agency for development cooperation against poverty and oppression.
  • The long peace: Sweden's last war was in the early 1800s. The war of 1808 to 1809 lost Finland after almost 700 years, Norway left the union peacefully in 1905, and Swedish policy since aimed to avoid war.
  • The Cold War: two blocs, USA versus the Soviet Union, with Denmark and Norway in Nato while Sweden stayed neutral.
  • The turn: after Russia attacked Ukraine in 2022, Sweden and Finland applied to Nato, and Sweden became a member in 2024. Expect this date on the test.
  • The defense: totalförsvarsplikt for everyone in Sweden aged 16 to 70, the Armed Forces with army, navy and air force, universal conscription from 18, and a civil defense that keeps schools, work and healthcare running in crisis or war.
